This quarantine thing has everyone going crazy. Whether you are on day number 2 (like us) or day number 20, it’s driving everyone a little nuts. It seems like most people may be having trouble keeping a normal schedule during quarantine.

If we’ve learned anything in two days, (4 if you include the weekend) it’s that a schedule is key to stick to. A surprise here and there or something new and fun will keep things interesting and help the time fly by, but there are two aspects of a schedule that we will ALWAYS (quarantining or not) revolve our life around:

Food.

Sleep.

That’s it. Just food, an eating schedule, and sleep/wake schedules. If you continue to eat healthy on your normal schedule as well as wake up and go to bed at your normal times as you would if you were heading into the office, you will find that you feel better, more energized and “on track” so-to-speak.

What is normal?

Normal is different for each person and each family. For instance, I wake up at 5:30 a.m. to do a workout 3 days per week, I continue to do so! The dogs get fed at their normal 6:15 a.m. time, and if the kids are not up by 6:30, we get them up as we would if they were heading to daycare. It’s hard keeping a normal schedule during quarantine, but we’re getting there!

Yes. We wake up our children. Why? Because if they aren’t up then the rest of the day in regards to food, eating, and sleeping/nap will all be off. Then come bedtime no one will know what to do with themselves because people will be angry or overfull, exhausted or too energized. I’d rather not find out which one it ends up being and would just prefer to stick to the normal schedule.

Time management is organized

Why keep a strict time on everything? Because our family (personally) thrives on this. There will be days here and there that things are off. Even on the weekends, some times nap ends up being 2 pm instead of 12:30 pm. We’re okay with ending up being off of the time. But as long as it goes something like this:

Wake, breakfast, play, snack, play, lunch, nap, snack, play, dinner, play, bed.

Lots of play, we do not only PLAY, and we DO let our kids have screen time, otherwise, this mama would go INSANE which is the exact opposite of what we need to try to be doing right now.

For those of you who like things to be a bit more specific, I have outlined our routine. Again, this is not followed to a T every day, but it is the rough outline that daycare uses and so we are using at home during the quarantine. Scheduled Timeline

6:30 Wake up the kids (before this, mom does a 30-minute workout 3 days per week). Small breakfast snacks, and keep the normal morning routine by getting dressed and brushing teeth.

7:30 a.m. Eat a full breakfast. Ideas for breakfast when you’re stuck at home are fruit and yogurt, cereal, peanut butter toast or bagel.

8:00 a.m. Morning Activity, coloring, a craft, reading, playdough.

9:00 a.m. Morning snack like a granola bar, pop tart, cheese and crackers.

9:30 a.m. Outside or indoor exercise. Tramp, ride-on toy. Have fun in a different room in the house. Do baby yoga. YouTube kid exercise. Walk, bike ride, swing set. Play hide and seek. Have a dance party.

11:30 a.m. Lunch. It may be necessary to distract the kids with a TV show or tablet game so you can take a minute.

12 Noon. Relax by reading, helping clean up, listen to music. Puzzles.

12:30 p.m. Nap/rest time in bedrooms. If a nap isn’t working, it may be time for a movie.

2:30 p.m. Wake up and watch a show or movie. Read a book

3:00 p.m. Have a snack. Goldfish, string cheese, pretzels, fruit snacks.

4:00 p.m. Play. Get outside, do any activity to get the kids moving again. Play hide and seek or use the indoor tamp. Do a baking activity.

5:00 p.m. Have kids help get dinner ready. Put on a show or give them tablet time if they cannot help. Virtual museum tours or parks tours. Tablet games with numbers, colors, shapes.

6:00 p.m. Eat dinner.

6:30 p.m. Do a calm activity, finish the movie from the afternoon or do yoga. Read books, color, do a puzzle.

7:00 p.m. Clean up and get ready for a warm bath. Play bath time games.

7:00 p.m. Do a bedtime story. Or whatever your normal bedtime routine may be.

The most important part of the day

Kids hopefully will be sleeping by 8:00 or 8:30 p.m. so mom and dad can have a minute to catch up or separate from each other to have some downtime. Here are more ideas for you on the types of activities to do with the kids!

This time of night is always my time to have a glass of red and catch up on TV shows. It has not been nice enough in Minnesota yet to be able to sit outside, but that is typically our summertime evening activity is being outside in silence with a campfire just chatting about how crazy the kids are, and how exhausted we are.

Then the best part is, we get to do it all over again the next day.

Remember it’s okay to change it up

It’s okay to be off schedule and it’s okay to change it up. It will keep things interesting and fun for the kids, and then mom and dad won’t get bored either! Try keeping a normal schedule during quarantine, it will help everyone stay a little saner and give a sense of calm during this crazy storm!
