If you’re looking into baby proofing, then maybe you already have your babe! But if you are just doing your research and preparing yourself, then a must-read article is this list of the top 40 Amazon products to have on your Amazon registry!!!
You’ll probably want top be prepared to bring baby home too, there are a few essentials that we found were NEEDED that first couple of weeks we were at home with our newborn baby.
With each developmental milestone, comes a new thing to baby proof. Let’s start with the very basics of baby-proofing! Childproofing your home will help eliminate mom stress and worry. Anxiety comes naturally with having children, and you want them to be as safe as possible.
Here are my guidelines for babyproofing your home! And 10 products to baby-proof with the best of the best.
Baby is going to be crawling before you know it. Get cupboard locks on now! The simplest ones that are not going to make any holes in your cupboards are definitely the easiest, however, you might want to consider something a little more in-depth.
Our favorite ones are easy to push in/down and a screwed in so tight, that you never have to worry about your baby getting into the garbage can again! Or under the sink!
If you feel like really being super ambitious, might as well get the toilet lid locked down.
Seriously, it seems ridiculous, but our youngest (at 14 months) goes to the toilet to lift up the lid and put his hand in, toothbrush, or whatever else he can find to dump in the toilet.
Lock up the fridge, oven, dishwasher. There are only two products you need for this one. And it’s pretty simple to operate. Or at least for most. Super affordable too! Can’t put a price on safety.
Door handles, outlet covers
These are all things that a crawling, and soon-to-be walking baby will get into. They do make door handle covers for both knob handles and lever handles! We’ve had to get and use both. Outlet covers and power strip covers are another must-have when baby starts to move and grove!
Do you know how many kids end up playing and getting wrapped in cords of blinds? This is a REAL mom fear but can be fixed with cheap simple cord shorteners.
Oh man, baby gates. What to get, right? How about one that doesn’t bolt into the walls? Amazing, right! One that the baby can actually NOT open up? Believe me, when I say, we’ve been through over a dozen baby gates and FINALLY found one that works perfectly for our family.
So much so, we have four of these things in our house.
Fasten the Furniture to the wall
Yes, it’s a thing, and yes, you need to do it. Granted one babe might enjoy climbing and the other one not so much. This was the case in our house. so we just fastened everything to the wall anyways.
It can be a daunting task. Just make it an afternoon nap-time activity for you and dada to bond over! Nothing like baby proofing for an afternoon date!
Cover coffee table corners
Those little baby heads are soft, and although babies are resilient… no one likes a bonk on the noggin from the sharp corner of the table! They will be walking and growing to that perfect heigh soon enough. It’s never too soon to make sure those corners are covered up.
Yes, we’re already talking about bed rails? Why? Because that child is going to be sleeping in a toddler bed before you know it. And you should not waste the money on a toddler bed, go straight to a twin size with a toddler rail.
Oh man, I tell you what, kids think it is the coolest thing ever to be in a “big bed”. We had a couple of instances, but taught our son to crawl back up in bed and mama or dada will be there in just a minute to help him get all tucked back in.
He is so good about it, and will NOT let us take down his bed rail. Which is totally fine, he can have that rail up as long as he pleases!
Baby proofing the outdoors
Okay, so this is silly. It’s not actually possible to baby proof the outside. But what you CAN do is have a safe space for babe to play in while you get some yard work done.
No one wants to have a baby outside running around in dog poop. Is that just our family? The dog poop thing? Hmm. Oh well!
While dad mows, and mom picks up dog poop, we can do so easily and quickly knowing there isn’t any trouble that the younger one can get into! Then after the work is done, playtime is to be had.
The best investment you could make is a playyard for outside. It makes life a whole lot easier and you can enjoy being outdoors while RELAXING knowing that your kid isn’t eating grass or rocks!
And that pretty much wraps up 10 products to baby-proof!
